Baltimore Orioles agrees to a $6.15 million deal with Adam Jones– MLB news
According to a leading sports website, Adam Jones has agreed to a one year $6.15 million contract with Baltimore Orioles. The deal will also let the centre fielder avoid arbitration and the Orioles are delighted at securing a deal with one of the best centre fielders in the business.
Jones produced some great performances last season to make a name for himself. According to sources, Jones had requested for $7.4 million for one year but the Orioles countered with $5 million offer. After weeks of negotiations, both parties finally agreed to a $6.15 million deal.
The 26-year-old right hander will also have an opportunity to earn $50,000 in performance based incentives. Breaking down, he will be getting $25K for reaching 620 plate appearances and another $25K if he makes 635 plate appearances in the upcoming season.
Jones displayed some high quality hitting skills to earn his first 25 home-run career season. Batting with a decent .280 average with 83 RBIs in 151 games, he looked on top of his game play. Showing great composure and baseball skills, he posted his career best stats with 26 doubles, 264 total bases and 12 stolen bases.
In an interview, Orioles' general manager Dan Duquette stated that the two parties also discussed possibilities of a long term contract but currently, focus is on a one year deal. He further added that, it is “something we can revisit”.
“We are glad we agreed to terms with Adam and we look forward to another good year from him in center field and at the plate,” said Dan Duquette.
Jones’ agent, Nez Balelo, co-head of CAA Baseball, released the following statement: “Adam is pleased we were able to come to terms and avoid a hearing. We appreciate Dan and the organization's professional approach in finding common ground. We look forward to working with him and his staff in the future.”
Jones, who will be a free agent in 2013, will be looking to make the most of available opportunities in Spring Training. If he can maintain his sensational form in 2012, he can earn another huge pay day at the end of the season.
