Baltimore Orioles annihilated by Minnesota Twins 7-19 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles were annihilated by the Minnesota Twins 7-19 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Monday, July 16 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The Twins, who have taken a few beatings lately, finally managed to end up on the winning side as they snapped their five games losing streak in great style.
While making it to the playoffs seems almost impossible, Ron Gardenhire and his men can certainly make themselves proud by ending the season on a high note.
"We've been taking a few beatings lately. It's nice to be on this side of one," manager Ron Gardenhire said.
Baltimore, on the other hand, has no one to blame except themselves. It seems the injuries are taking their toll on them.
Manager Buck Showalter will be certainly expecting his players to show more character and composure at this crucial time of the season.
Right now, the Orioles are placed second on the American League East Division standings and they still have a slim chance to make it to the post-season.
Despite seeing the Orioles lose more often than not over the last few weeks, the fans still have high expectations from their team.
"I don't think when you give up 19 runs you can hang your hook on one play," Showalter said.
"They can cover some ground out there," said Mark Reynolds, who made a costly error in the first inning.
Denard Span produced a match winning performance for the Twins as he drove in five crucial runs. Taking superb catches in deep centre-field, he played a key role in deciding the outcome of the game.
Right fielder Ben Revere also had an excellent outing as he finished with four hits and three RBI’s.
"Basically having a center fielder in right field, it's huge for us because it just allows you to force the hitters to put balls in play," said Twins’ starting pitcher Scott Diamond, who allowed five runs in six innings.
Starting pitcher Chris Tillman had forgettable time on the mound, giving up five hits and seven runs in just 0.2 innings.
