Baltimore Orioles annihilated by New York Yankees 3-12 in series finale – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles suffered a humiliating 3-12 defeat at the hands of the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in New York on Wednesday, August 1 in the finale of their three match series.
The Orioles, who had the better of their opponents in first two games, were unable to take advantage of unforced errors on Wednesday as they missed out on the opportunity to earn a rare series sweep at Yankee Stadium.
Starting pitcher Zach Britton was lucky to be taken off after pitching two plus poor innings. He gave up seven runs on seven hits with just three strike-outs to take his first loss of the season.
Relief pitcher Kevin Gregg was hit for a grand slam by Cano, which ballooned his ERA to 4.28.
Phil Hughes, on the other hand, grabbed his 11th win of the year after allowing just a run in six high quality innings.
"I didn't pitch well at all," said Phil Hughes in a post game interview. "Didn't have good stuff. Didn't have good location. Was just trying to bear down and get some outs when I really needed them."
"We're in the hunt, and I understand what I have to do to be at this level," he added. "I'm not getting it done right now. So I got to either do something or somebody else is going to come up and find a way to do the job."
Credit should also be given to Yankees’ batting line-up that dominated the Orioles pitching attack right from the start of the contest.
Robinson Cano, in particular, looked in crushing form as he hit a grand slam in the third inning to lay the foundations of an impressive Yankees’ victory.
Curtis Granderson homered in the first inning to give the Yankees a kind of start they desperately needed.
Adam Jones had a sacrifice fly hit to centre in the first and Captain Derek Jeter made valuable contributions in the second and the third to help the Yankees take a commanding 11-1 lead.
Orioles’ Eric Chavez had two RBI’s and J.J. Hardy homered to left in the seventh but Baltimore never looked getting close to the twelve runs of the Yankees.
