Baltimore Orioles beat Boston Red Sox 6-5 in close first outing of double header – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles romped to a 6-5 win against the Boston Red Sox in the first of the two scheduled meetings at Fenway Park in Boston on Monday, September 19 and took a 1-0 lead in the four-game outing.
Orioles, despite being the weakest club of the season, topped the struggling Red Sox first with the batting and then with the ball. Switch fielder Matt Angle led the game off touching a double to deep-left for an RBI double in the top of the third inning.
Second baseman Robert Andino started the fourth with his devastating two-run homer run off the Red Sox rookie starter Kyle Weiland. Left-fielder Nolan Reimold also launched a destroying homer to take the club to 5-1 in the top of the fourth inning.
Orioles’ starter Jeremy Guthrie defended the lead and tossed perfectly to send Boston on the back foot. Although the right-hand pitcher has given a homer to Darnell McDonald of the Red Sox in the bottom of the third, he made a strong comeback and created
trouble for Boston’s batting line-up.
Guthrie tagged for ten hits, four runs and four earned runs over six innings but still earned his ninth win of the season and first in nine outing in Fenway Park.
After making his mark in the Park, Guthrie considered the day to be his best in baseball.
A jubilant starter said, "It's an interesting stretch that we've had. ... We are playing teams that are trying to win and giving us everything they have, and to be able to compete against them and play well is a compliment to our team and the guys here and
the staff. So hopefully we can keep doing that and finish strong."
J.J. Hardy also launched a homer in the fifth before his fellow relief pitchers ended the game with a 6-5 win. Orioles snatched their fifth win in last seven games and they have to compete against the Red Sox in the second outing of the double header later
in the evening.
"I don't even know the math or whatever, but there is only one place to be, and the rest of it doesn't play in my mind," Showalter said.
Orioles now have to make some key victories to win the hearts of their desperate fans. They have made some good wins in the season but these last few wins will add some relief to their camp.
