Baltimore Orioles beat Boston Red Sox in 13th innings at the Camden Yards - MLB News
Baltimore Orioles overcame a strong challenge from the Boston Red Sox to win 5-4 on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the Camden Yards in the bottom of the 13th innings.
It was a tug of war between the two American League East teams that have been locking horns for the top honours. The hosts were able to win the game courtesy of an RBI single by first baseman Chris Davis. It was the first run since
the top of the seventh in which Red Sox had scored two runs.
Nick Markakis was pleased by the win and said that the beauty of playing at home is to get the final hit. He was also pleased by the good show by the bullpen that did not let any runs to the Boston ballclub.
"That's the beautiful thing about home-field advantage," Markakis said. "You get the last shot. It always seems like once you get to the ninth inning, it's hard to come by hits. We battled in there. Our bullpen did a good job and
allowed us to get up there and win the ballgame, and that's what we did."
The birds got in front in the third innings with three runs on the board before the Red Sox got two more runs in the next innings.
Orioles added another run in the fifth. The Boston ballclub scored two more in the seventh innings to comeback on even terms.
Buck Showalter, the manager for the Orioles, said that the birds have a lot of respect for the Boston Red Sox who have made a phenomenal turnaround from the previous season. He said that the team was much more than just a big payroll
and they are a force to reckon with.
"It's a team that our guys really respect," Showalter said. "It's a team, this year, that really plays the game right. … The things that they do, it's more than just payroll. They have good people. You can tell they put some good
people in place and they're going to be a force all year.”
It was an important win for the Orioles who are now second in the American League East. A win in this series could well see them just a game away from the top spot.
