Baltimore Orioles beat New York Yankees 2-1 after Adam Jones goes deep in 9th innings - MLB News
Baltimore Orioles were able to get the better of the New York Yankees, beating them 2-1 after a ninth innings home-run by centre fielder Adam Jones on Sunday, June 7, 2013 at the Yankee Stadium. The victory meant that the birds
were able to avoid being swept by the Yankees.
It was a sedate game where neither of the teams was able to produce a lot in terms of runs. The Yankees took a one-run lead in the bottom of the second innings after Eduardo Nunez’s sacrifice fly.
Things appeared to be hunky dory for the New York ballclub until Adam Jones went deep in the ninth innings against closer Mariano Rivera with Nick Markakis on the first base. The lead was enough for the birds to win after Jim Johnson
made his 30th save of the season.
Adam Jones was happy to score after he had a lean patch with home-runs. It was also the first time since September of 2010 that Mariano blew a save at home. The streak consisted of 41 games.
Adam said that he will remember this home-run as it came against one of the greatest closers of all times. He also felt that the team had not been performing well in the series and there is a need to improve the overall game.
"It's off the greatest closer in the history of the game. I'll always remember it," said Jones. "You've got to win, and we haven't been playing that well. We need to tighten up. We need to clean it up around here."
Orioles' Manager Buck Showalter was pleased with the effort and said that it was not an easy task to take on the likes of Rivera with much success. He felt that the team had a lot positivity towards the end and it was always a
pleasure to win in tough conditions such as those against the Yankees.
"Any time you're sitting there with Robertson and Rivera, you don't like your chances," Showalter said "But there was a good vibe in the dugout. The guys were grinding. And it's tough. Very challenging conditions. ... That's why
if you can achieve things, it's so gratifying, because it's so hard to do.”
Yankees opening pitcher Hiroko Kuroda threw seven scoreless innings. Orioles’ starting pitcher Jason Hammel was in the game for five innings, giving up five hits and surrendering a single run. His pitching efforts were backed with
some excellent fielding work by the O’s.
The game once again took the Baltimore Orioles to the second spot in the AL East after briefly losing the spot to the Yankees. All three games in the series were decided by a single run which shows how evenly matched the two teams
are. They should have an interesting rivalry potentially for the top spot in the division come September.
