Baltimore Orioles beat Seattle Mariners, 2-1 to earn second series-sweep in 2011: MLB Update
The Baltimore Orioles overpowered the Seattle Mariners 2-1 in the third outing of the three-game series at the Oriole Park on Thursday, May 12, to earn their second series-sweep of the season since their 3-0 opening series win against the Tampa Bay
Rays.
The Orioles’ starter, Zach Britton, had a remarkable day with the ball as the pitcher threw nine shut-out innings to earn his fifth win of the season. The 23-year-old rookie pitcher gave just three hits and managed five strike-outs to achieve his Club's
seventeenth win of the season.
"My job was to keep us in the game as long as possible," Britton said. "You've got to tip your hat to Vargas, who threw the ball really well. When's that going to happen again, two guys going like that?"
The Mariners’ starter, Jason Vargas, also tossed score-less innings, yielded seven hits, walked one and struck out four, but had just two perfect innings. The right-hand hurler, despite tossing strong pitches, lost his second game of the season.
The 28-year-old pitcher was satisfied with the performance he displayed in his fourth start of the season. As Vergas had not yielded any run, so he said that it was all the Club was expecting from him.
The relievers from both sides were also remained scoreless, as the Orioles K. Gregg pitched score-less one inning while the Mariners' Jamey Wright tossed two score-less innings and forced the game into the twelfth inning.
The Orioles' closer, made a strong start of his two innings long spell, but gave away the led off run to the Mariners’ Miguel Olivo. However, the Orioles’ short-stop James Jerry Hardy hit a runs batted in (RBI) single off the Mariners’ closer, Brandon
League in the bottom half of the inning to cement the Club’s brilliant win.
"I just didn't do my job. It all comes down to that," League said. "I didn't do my job coming in to close out the game. We have to recuperate and forget about this series."
The Orioles mobbed Hardy after achieving their second extra innings win in the same series. Two nights earlier, the Orioles scored twice in the thirteenth inning for a 7-6 triumph.
"I just wanted to hit the ball hard," Hardy said. "He threw a sinker first pitch and then he threw another sinker second pitch, and I was able to find a hole."
The win would help the Orioles land against the Rays for the third time in the season. The series has very important significant for both the teams, as both the have gained a series each, with the Orioles winning first and the Rays coming second.
