Baltimore Orioles beat Tampa Bay Rays 9-3 to win series 2-1: MLB Update
The Baltimore Orioles overpowered their league rivals Tampa Bay Rays 9-3 at the Tropicana Field, on Sunday night, May 15, to clinch the three-game series 2-1.
Matt Wieters hit a RBI single off Rays’ starter Andy Sonnanstine in the second inning to provide his Club an early 1-0 lead. Derek Lee, then added an RBI double to take his team to 3-0 in the top of the third inning.
Rays’ batter Elliot Johnson, who was under some pressure, launched a towering 383-feet one-run homer off Orioles’ starter, Jake Arrieta, to trim the lead by one run. Then, Casey Kotchman added an RBI single to ease the problems of his Club and the score
moved to 2-3.
Orioles’ right fielder, Nick Markakis hammered a homer to the right side of the field to elevate the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth inning, However, the real problem arose for the Rays when James Jerry Hardy touched a four-run grand slam in the sixth
inning and took the lead to 8-2.
The game remained scoreless in the next two innings until Matt Joyce scored an RBI single for the Rays, trimming the lead by one run. However, Rays’ closer, Adam Russell, could not stop the Orioles from adding another score in the last inning and the Club
lost their seventeenth game in the season.
Arrieta gave away just two runs on four hits, walked three and made seven strikeouts to earn his fifth win of the season. Arrieta now has 5-1 record with a 4.03 ERA.
Relievers Jim Johnson and Clay Rapada did not yield any run over their short spells. Mike Gonzalez consumed a run over one inning, while closer Koji Uehara tossed a perfect ninth inning to hold his third game of the season.
Sonnanstine, on the other side, gave four runs on eight hits, walked none and made just two strikeouts to bear his first loss of the season. Reliever Rob Delaney was the most expensive of all the pitchers as he gave away three runs in less than an inning.
Cesar Ramos gave one run on one hit and made one strikeout over one inning, while Closer Adam Russell also gave a run on three hits over one inning. Rays’ only successful ball thrower was Brandon Gomes, who didn't give a single run his two-inning spell.
Gomes has a 1.80 ERA and 5 strikeouts to his name this season.
