Baltimore Orioles beaten by Boston Red Sox 1-2 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles lost to the Boston Red Sox 1-2 in a thrilling encounter at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Sunday, September 23 in the finale of their three match series.
Orioles won first two games of the series quite convincingly. Manager Buck Showalter was expecting his men to put up another powerful performance in the finale to get back to the top of American League East Division standings table. However, that did not
turn out to be the case as the Red Sox played out of their skins to avoid a humiliating series sweep.
Orioles are still in the AL East title race and it will be interesting to see if they can win their remaining games to surprise league leaders New York Yankees.
"We needed this one. Obviously, going down to this last stretch every game is looked at as a must win," Adam Jones said. "We had a good road trip. We really, really wanted this one to finish off the road trip, but it happens."
"Coming to Boston, take two out of three, I don't care what kind of team we're playing or how we're playing," Baltimore's Mark Reynolds said. "It's always big and we keep winning series and we'll see where we're at here in a week or two."
Starting pitcher Chris Tillman produced another outstanding performance as he gave up just one run in six effective innings to keep his side in the contest. Relief pitcher Luis Ayala took the loss after he gave up the tie breaking single to Cody Ross in
the eighth inning.
For the Red Sox, starting pitcher Felix Doubront enjoyed a great time on the mound, allowing just four hits in seven solid innings to lay the foundation of Boston’s victory. He will be looking to continue his excellent form in the next season to take Red
Sox out of the slump.
After the Red Sox took an early 1-0 lead, Manny Machado singled to shallow right in the fifth inning to level the score 1-1. With the score tied at 1-1, Ross doubled to left to give Red Sox a superb victory.
The Orioles will be disappointed as they struggled to get their offence going against the Red Sox and lost.
