Baltimore Orioles beaten by Boston Red Sox 6-8 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles were beaten by Boston Red Sox 6-8 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Monday, May 21 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The Red Sox scored first in the game but the Orioles fought back immediately. Xavier Avery walked and Wilson Betemit scored in the third to bring Baltimore right back into the contest, reducing Red Sox lead to 1-2.
J.J. Hardy had another strong outing as he reached on infield single to shortstop and Nick Johnson scored to level score 2-2 for his team. The offence continued to be productive for the Orioles and Nick Markakis walked and Robert Andino scored to give the Orioles a slim 3-2 advantage in the third.
Adam Jones’s grounded double play and Chris Davis’s solo home run to right in the sixth gave the Orioles complete control of the situation and it seemed they will hang on to their lead to devastate their opponents.
However, Bobby Valentine and company staged an emphatic comeback, thanks to David Ortiz who homered to right to keep Boston in the hunt. Daniel Nava, Adrian Gonzalez, Will Middlebrooks and Dustin Pedroia rose to the occasion to seal an impressive win for the Red Sox.
Starting pitcher Clay Buchholz allowed five runs in just over five innings. His counterpart from Baltimore, Tommy Hunter also paid the price for his errors on the mound.
"Yeah, it's a tough one to lose, but there's always positive things we can take away from the game," Davis said answering a question. "We swung the bats really well tonight, made some good plays defensively. Just couldn't hang in there."
"We got a lead and we gave it up and we weren't going to be denied," Manager Bobby Valentine said in a post game interview. "I thought David's home run really uplifted us. It was such a power stroke."
The Orioles had a tough time in their previous three game series against Atlanta Braves and they were looking to turn things around with a strong performance against the Red Sox but they failed to do so.
