Baltimore Orioles beaten by Seattle Mariners 3-6 at Safeco Field – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles were beaten by Seattle Mariners 3-6 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Monday, July 2 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Short-stop Brendan Ryan singled to centre in the third inning to break the deadlock and give the Mariners an early 1-0 lead. Chris Davis homered to right in the fourth inning to help Baltimore claim a 3-1 lead.
Catcher Miguel Olivo and second baseman Dustin Ackley hit back-to-back home-runs in the eighth inning to stun Showalter and his men and Seattle came back from behind to grab an impressive victory.
"You get a starter late in the ballgame there, you're hoping you get a mistake or a pitch to hit, and I think we got a couple of those but the fact of the matter is you still have to hit them," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "I think that's been our biggest
issue. I don't think it's been a situation of we haven't had pitches to hit."
Orioles’ starting pitcher Jason Hammel took his fourth loss of the season as he gave up seven hits and four runs in just over six innings.
"I did exactly what I wanted, started him with a fastball away and then a slider off the plate, what we had been doing all night," Hammel said.
Manager Buck Showalter will be an extremely worried person these days. It seems the Orioles have gone into to a shell. With just three wins in their last 10 games, Orioles’ poor form over the last couple of weeks has cost them the first place on the American
League East Division standings table.
Right now, the Orioles are six games behind the league leaders New York Yankees and it will be interesting to see if they can regroup themselves to narrow the gap.
Seattle, on the other hand, used their home conditions superbly to establish complete control over the contest. Credit must be given to the pitching rotation that held off the Orioles to secure an important victory. Baltimore will be looking to improve their
on-field performance and try to build up some much needed confidence in the line-up.
