Baltimore Orioles beaten by Tampa Bay Rays 1-4 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 1-4 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Wednesday, October 3 in the finale of their three match series.
Evan Longoria had an excellent outing with the bat as he smacked three home-runs to help Rays post a decent total on the board. For the Orioles, Adam Jones hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the ninth to help his side avoid an embarrassing shut-out defeat.
"We knew it was a long shot, but we ran into some really good pitching," Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter said of Longoria’s home-run. "I've got to tip my hat to them, and what is really kind of amazing is that you look over there with what they've been able
to do this year, win 90 games, and that tells you what a fine line there is in all those extra-inning games and one-run losses, and we could be in the same position they are."
"We're going to take it one game at a time. Obviously, if you lose, you're done," said Orioles’ slugger Chris Davis.
After beating their American League East Division rivals in Game 2, the Orioles had an excellent chance to grab a rare series victory at Tropicana Field but it was the Rays who bounced back superbly to clinch a thrilling win.
Credit should be given to the Manager Joe Maddon for using pitching and hitting resources perfectly this season. Although the Rays have failed to make it to the playoffs, they have given their fans a lot to cheer about.
The pitching rotation, in particular, has produced some magical performances since the start of the season. Starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson had another excellent outing as he allowed just one hit in five plus effective innings to play a key role in deciding
the outcome of the clash.
His counterpart from Baltimore, Chris Tillman had a forgettable time on the mound as he allowed four hits and three run in just five innings to suffer his third loss of the season. Relief pitcher Jake Arrieta was also unable to stop the flow of runs, giving
up one run in the sixth inning.
