Baltimore Orioles bring down Pittsburgh Pirates 7-1 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles continued to play aggressively as they brought down Pittsburgh Pirates 7-1 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Wednesday, June 13 in second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular
season.
Chris Davis had an excellent night with the bat as he doubled to deep left in the first inning and J.J. Hardy scored the first run for the Orioles.
Wilson Betemit also made his presence felt with a double to deep right centre in the second as Baltimore took an early 2-0 lead.
With momentum on their side, the Orioles continued to pressurise Pittsburgh’s weakened pitching lineup. Steve Pearce had an RBI single to centre in the second and Betemit hit a sacrifice fly to right in the fourth to extend Orioles’ lead to 4-0.
Third baseman Betemit had one of his career best nights, ending the game with three hits which included a solo home run in the sixth.
Neil Walker grounded out to first in the seventh to score the only run for the Pirates. Orioles’ starting pitcher Jake Arrieta finally managed to end his six game losing streak after he allowed just one run and seven hits with career high nine strikeouts.
"I'm not going to overthink it," Showalter said. "I tapped him on the shoulder about 2:30 in the food room and said, 'You're pitching tonight.' It's kind of out of the bag. I can't do it in five days now, so that's a one-time pop."
"I went back to doing some things I was doing when I was successful," he said. "Kind of made some things a lot more simple than they were a couple weeks ago. I wasn't thinking as much. Going out there and really executing."
In some ways, the win will be of great importance for the Orioles, who are still within touching distance of American League East Division leaders New York Yankees.
There is no denying the fact the Orioles have some of the best hitting and pitching talent in their squad but they will have to fight continuously with the Yankees for the first place on AL East standings.
