Baltimore Orioles claim Alexi Casilla, Brian Roberts, four others reinstated from DL - MLB News
The Baltimore Orioles have made several changes on their roster including out-righting three of their players to Triple-A Norfolk, bringing five players back from the disabled list and acquiring Alexi Casilla off-waivers from the Minnesota Twins.
Casilla in his six years in the Major League has only represented the Minnesota Twins. The right-handed hitter played 106 games in 2012 season and had a decent batting average of .241. He also stole 21 bases in 22 attempts. The 28-year-old has shown signs
of a bright future and can prove to be an asset for the team in the future.
Those removed from the 60 day disabled list include left-handed pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada, right-handed pitchers Oliver Drake and Stu Pomeranz, outfielder Nolan Reimold and infielder Brian Roberts.
Roberts is an 11 year veteran with the Orioles. The switch hitter could only be a part of the team on 17 occasions in 2012 due to a concussion from 2011 and later due to groin trouble. He had a surgery on his right hip in August.
Tsuyoshi Wada had a left elbow surgery in May and could not participate in the 2012 season. The 31-year-old veteran from the Japan’s Pacific League is likely going to make his Major league debut in the next season.
Nolan Reimold had a herniated disc in the neck in early May which cut short his action in 2012. He had a batting average of .313 in the 16 games he played. A fully fit Nolan can be more than useful for the ball club in the future.
Oliver Drake was out of action because of right shoulder tendonitis. The 25-year-old pitcher has played for several Orioles’ farm teams and has yet to make his Major League debut.
The 27-year-old Stu Pomeranz made his Major League debut in 2012 with the Baltimore Orioles. The right-handed pitcher made three appearances with a 3.0 ERA. He was placed on the disabled list in later part of May due to a left oblique injury.
The players who were out-righted to Triple-A Norfolk include outfielder Lew Ford, infielder Steve Tolleson and pitcher Zach Phillips. Lew Ford had joined the Orioles in 2012. The right-handed hitter has had a start-stop career so far. In 2012, he had a .183
batting average in 25 games. This was his first season after 2007 in which he played in the Major League.
Tolleson made his Major League debut in 2010 with the Oakland Athletics. He was called up by the Baltimore Orioles in May 2012. The right-handed hitter had thus far played 54 Major League games with a batting average of .225.
Zach Phillips was acquired in a trade with Texas Rangers in July 2011. He played six games for the team in the 2012 season with a 6.0 ERA. He also pitched in a few Triple-A games for the Norfolk Tides.
Like many other teams, the Orioles are also trying to find the right combination that they can carry forward. A good combination will help the team in continuing its consistent performance in the seasons to come.
