Baltimore Orioles crush New York Yankees 5-1 – MLB Spring Training
Baltimore Orioles thrashed the New York Yankees 5-1 on Monday, February 26 in their second game of 2013 Spring Training Campaign. New York Yankees dominated the Orioles for most part of the season last year.
Orioles were looking to turn things around and that is exactly what they did in an important cactus league. Showing great composure, mental strength and fighting abilities, the Orioles outclassed their American League East division rivals in finer details
of the game. Yankees, on the other hand, looked extremely rust. They had plenty opportunities to apply pressure on the Orioles but failed to do so. It will be interesting to see if they can learn from their mistakes to put up a better show in their next Spring
Training game.
"We've talked about we're probably not going to hit as many home runs as we did last year," Girardi said. "We have more speed, so the guy that fills in is going to be another speed guy, and you score runs more that way. We're going to have to rely on our
speed more, no doubt about it."
"It was nice to get out there and get the first one out of the way, kind of get in the rhythm again. It's been a while since I've been a starter. It's nice to work on the routine again and try and find that," Matusz said.
Orioles’ starting pitcher Brian Matusz dominated the Yankees batting lineup right from the start of the contest. The right hander used his fastballs and slider extremely effectively to create all sorts of problems for the Yankees. Relief pitchers Tommy Hunter
also made his presence felt, pitching a scoreless third inning.
For the Yankees, starter Vidal Nuno looked complete out of sorts. He struggled with line and accuracy and ended up giving up two hits and one run in just innings pitched. Orioles’ second baseman Brayan Roberts played a key role in deciding the outcome of
the clash, driving in two crucial runs. Adam Jones also had a decent time on the plate as he earned an RBI single in the seventh inning. Yankees’ only run was scored by Carlos Joseph.
