Baltimore Orioles defeat Boston Red Sox 5-4 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles won the game of nerves against Boston Red Sox 5-4 on Wednesday, April 27 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore.
Trailing by an overwhelming score of 4-0, the Red Sox jumped back into the game in the seventh inning with Adrian Gonzalez’s single and Kevin Youkilis’ three-run homer. However, it was Vladimir Guerrero who changed the complete map of the game in the eighth
inning, adding to the unending woes of Boston and relieving the Baltimore crowd.
The win not only entitled Baltimore a 2-1 series victory against the Red Sox, but also further improved the team’s record. Of the 18 encounters the two teams have had, it is the Orioles who have won 11. For this scintillating performance, the happiest of
all was Luke Scott. “We've taken our licks. We know what it's like to lose, get our butts beat and get buried. It's not fun," Scott said. "But at the same time, through the adversity we've learned to play hard, regardless of the circumstances. It's carrying
over to now, where we've gotten better as a team."
Boston was understandably shaken by the result of the game. Just when they strongly fought back, the whole essence of game sweepingly changed with one single. If the Red Sox players on the field went empty-handed, Boston’s manager had nothing but a feeling
of disappointment. "It was kind of a roller coaster that turned in a hurry for us," Boston’s manager Terry Francona said. "We were scrambling, not doing much offensively, then [Youkilis] gets the home run. Then we give up a run. It's a tough loss, it hurts."
After the initial three scoreless innings, the Orioles made an onslaught with their relentless offence which took Boston off-guard. Scott was the first to do it followed by Adam Jones. Josh Beckett’s fastballs had their own unavoidable vulnerabilities that
resulted in three hits and three runs. With a 3-0 lead, Baltimore went ahead and made it 4-0 in the fifth inning. Beckett was once again taken to task by Brian Roberts, as he hit a sacrifice fly to right to take a comfortable lead.
The game took a turn in the eighth inning, as Boston’s Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Youkilis broke the unplayable spell of Jeremy Accardo with Gonzalez scoring a single and Youkilis scoring a three-run homer. Three hits in the inning gave Boston four runs.
However, Vladimir Guerrero turned everything upside down for the Red Sox with a single to centre and made it 5-4 for the Orioles.
The win was sealed in the 9th inning with Kevin Gregg pitching a shut-out inning, enabling the Orioles to win 5-4.
