Baltimore Orioles defeat Minnesota Twins 4-1 – MLB Update
The Baltimore Orioles put an end to their five-game losing streak on Monday, August 22 and beat the Minnesota Twins 4-1 at Target Field.
It was Zach Britton who also won his first game in over two months and J. J. Hardy homered to embolden the Orioles’ grip on the game.
J. J. Hardy’s homer was of high importance for him and the team. "Someone was saying he had a Hardy jersey on," the Baltimore shortstop said with a grin. "Any time you get a second chance, it's nice."
For Zach Britton, it was a game to remember. Having failed to win for over 10 weeks, the Baltimore starter allowed a run and gave up six hits in the five innings that he pitched compared to Minnesota starter Carl Pavano who allowed four runs as he gave up
nine hits.
Most importantly, Britton came after remaining in disabled list. "It was big," Britton said. "Any time you can get out of those situations, especially in a close game and especially on my first game back, to be able to get out of there where I haven't been
able to in the past was pretty big."
Both Zach Britton and Carl Pavano threw solid enough innings to start the game with on Monday. The Baltimore Orioles, however, had Ryan Adams to capitalise on a fastball of Pavano as he singled to right to score the first run in the 3-hit third inning.
Minnesota Twins came back quickly with Joe Mauer’s single, levelling the score by the end of the third inning. J.J. Hardy broke the 1-1 tie against Pavano in the top of the fifth inning, giving the Orioles an invaluable 2-1 lead in the game.
Zach Britton came down hard on the Twins to maintain the lead whole Pavano kept struggling to have a hold on the Baltimore Orioles’ hitters. Matt Wieters homered to right in the sixth to put the Orioles in a more comfortable position with 3-1 lead.
While Chris Jakubauskas relieved Britton to pitch the sixth, Nick Markakis had another single to score against Carl Pavano in the seventh to have 4-1 edge for the Baltimore Orioles by the end of the inning.
Matt Capps came to pitch the eighth for the Twins as Pavano was relieved while Mile Gonzalez remained on the mound to pitch the shutout eighth for the Orioles, keeping the 4-1 lead intact for his team.
Kevin Gregg who could not save a few games lately remained unplayable in the ninth, much to the frustration of the Minnesota Twins and kept the inning scoreless, winning the game by 4-1 for the Baltimore Orioles and to make a good start in the four-game
series.
