Baltimore Orioles defeat New York Yankees 4-2 – MLB Update
The Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 4-2 in the first outing of the four-game series at Yankee Stadium in New York on Friday, July 29.
Orioles enjoyed their first win over the Yankees since March 13 when their regular season series started. Their starter Jeremy Guthrie tossed one-run seven innings to outpitch the Yankees’ Allan James Burnett, who struck 10 strike-outs for the first time
in this season. Guthrie struck-out five batters, allowing four hits and three walks in a spell extending to 114 pitches.
Mark Reynolds launched a glittering 390-feet long two-run homer to lead the game off in the top of the second inning. This hit added some more impetus in the Orioles’ camp especially to Derek Lee, who scored an RBI single in the fourth and hammered a ballistic
homer in the sixth to elevate the lead to 4-0 in a rain delayed game.
Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter was aware of Guthrie’s aspiration to get such a devastating performance from his pitchers.
Just before the Guthrie ended his sixth inning, Yankees’ Mark Teixeira touched a strong hit to right-field for a homer. However, Guthrie managed to grab his fifth win of the season. Koji Uehara also provided a strong back-up with his one-hitter and two strike-outs
eighth inning. Closer Kevin Gregg gave a single to Nick Swisher in the ninth, but struck-out one batter to get his 17th save of the season.
"Jeremy needed it. Jeremy's pitched well enough to have some more Ws next to his name, so I'm real proud of him tonight," Showalter said. "Everybody played well. There was a lot of intensity in a situation where some people may not have had it all the time."
Guthrie is a probable prospect before Sunday’s non-waiver deadline but this performance will create some positive news for him, whether inside the camp or out in the Majors.
"I don't anticipate anything happening," Guthrie said. "I've said it before, 99 percent of what goes on or is talked about around trade deadline doesn't ever happen. So why would you ever worry about it or think about it?"
Burnett struck-out a season high 10 batters, but remained winless for the ninth time in 2011 regular season. He allowed four runs, five hits and two walks over eight innings. Closer Luis Ayala tossed a two-hitter ninth inning but could not bring his team
back into the game.
Brett Gardner, Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson and Jorge Posada each failed to generate even a single run. Only Jeter and Posada out of these sluggers was able to touch a hit. Alex Rodriguez is still waiting to come off the disabled list.
