Baltimore Orioles defeat New York Yankees 4-3 – MLB Spring Training
Baltimore Orioles defeated New York Yankees 4-3 at the George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida on Thursday, March 29 in their Grapefruit League encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session.
Despite losing the game, the Yankees received some good news about their squad. Curtis Granderson, who missed a couple of games due to an elbow injury, bounced back strongly as he went 1 for 4. Manager Joe Girardi was very pleased to see him doing well at
the plate.
"Curtis was great," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
Right Fielder Nick Swisher was also out of the team with a groin injury. Hitting in a minor league game for the second straight day, he also showed signs of recovery.
"We'll see where he's at," Girardi said.
Yankees’ pitching rotation candidate, Ivan Nova gave up three runs and seven hits in just over seven innings in a Triple A game. Nova will be hoping to bring more consistency in his game play to win the available starting spot.
"He looked pretty good," Girardi said of Nova, a 16-game winner last season. "I think you have to look at everything, but you also have to look at his body of work from last year, too."
For Orioles, starter Jason Hammel put up a solid show, giving up two runs and five hits in just over five innings.
The Orioles will be very thrilled with the way they handled pressure in a close game. With their win over the Yankees, they have now improved their spring win-loss record to 11-11.
The Orioles may not be the strongest team in Major League Baseball; they have given considerable results since the start of 2012 Spring Training. A win over a highly capable team as the Yankees will certainly help them get confidence ahead of the regular
season.
Considering Orioles’ performances so far this spring, it is clear that they will not give up without putting up a fight. Flooring the mighty Yankees at the Steinbrenner Field, the Orioles gave their fans plenty to cheer about yesterday evening. It will be
interesting to see if the Orioles can manufacture similar performances during the regular season to claim a spot in playoffs.
