Baltimore Orioles defeat New York Yankees 5-4 in hurricane makeup game - MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles came from behind and dominated the New York Yankees 5-4 in the makeup of the outing postponed on August 27 due to hurricane Irene, played at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore on Thursday, September 8.
Yankees started the game with their three run lead in the top of the second and then one more run in the top of the third. However, Orioles' pitching depth retaliated brilliantly and stopped the journey of the Yankees' batting.
As the Yankees' batting was stopped, Orioles' started to do a little better with their batting as they piled runs in consecutive even innings. Vladimir Guerrero led his team off with his spell breaking one-run home-run off the Yankees’ starter Ivan Nova
in the bottom of the second inning.
Mark Reynolds, who was the hero of the Orioles last night’s 5-4 win, ground out to second-baseman but earned his RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Then in the sixth, Chris Davis added an RBI single to cut short the lead to 4-3. Robert Andino
first tied the outing at 4-all in the bottom of the eighth inning and then stroked a RBI single in the bottom of the tenth to take his team into another win over the American League’s leaders.
After the fourth inning, the Orioles' pitching squad did not gave the Yankees even a chance to steal bases. Jo-Jo Reyes started a scoreless streak tossing just over two hitless innings. Accardo completed the seventh inning tossing only four pitches. Troy
Patton worked the eighth and part of the ninth as he struck-out two batters. Gregg handed the ball in the ninth inning and struck-out four batters and allowed only one walk in just over a single inning.
In the top of the tenth inning Clay Rapada retired the only batter he faced.
"It shows a lot of heart. It shows a lot of character," Rapada said. "We're men just like they are. We want to compete and win. That's what it comes down to."
Orioles will not have the advantage of these two wins besides their effort to save 100 losses in the 2011 regular season but these games have created real trouble for the Yankees, who are looking to make it to the post-season in a dominating way.
