Baltimore Orioles defeat Toronto Blue Jays 6-2 – MLB Update
Chris Tillman had his first win since May 11 and Adam Jones hit a three run homer on Saturday, August 6 to help the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-2 at Orioles Park.
The win also helped the Orioles make a comeback in the three-game series after losing the first one.
But the Orioles had to put an extraordinary effort to attain the victory. They could not score a single run, could not execute a hit in the first five innings until Adam Jones had his three-run homer that completely changed the map of the game.
"Usually what happens in a situation like that, if you can just get something positive, the first hit seems to relax everybody and puts him in the stretch for the first time all night, basically," Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter said.
With the hit that came off Jones’ bat, Tillman also contributed in the team’s win. For Jones, it was more of a breather.
Compared to highly effective first two innings that Brandon Morrow of the Blue Jays threw, Tillman allowed a run to Colby Rasmus of the Blue Jays who homered to give an early 1-0 lead to the team.
However, the Orioles found it somewhat difficult to prove the offence’s efficacy as inning after inning went scoreless. Brandon Morrow was pitching brilliantly against the Orioles’ hitters, while Jose Bautista snapped in the second run for the Blue Jays
in the sixth inning.
Orioles’ offence finally sprang into action in the sixth inning when Morrow was subject to three hits that brought home four runs. Robert Andino scored a run as Escobar’s error made the team pay.
Adam Jones then hit the three-run homer, bringing for the first time the Orioles into the game with a 4-2 lead. Tillman then had a shut-out seventh inning followed by the Orioles’ offence another good inning, taking the lead to 6-2.
Nick Markakis flied out to centre to score a single while Adam Jones had his fourth and team’s sixth run in the eighth inning against the now seemingly straining Morrow.
Kevin Gregg, coming as a closer for the Orioles, was able to toss a shut-out ninth inning to turn the 6-2 lead into an absolute victory for the team, levelling the three-game series 1-1.
The Orioles managed to put in a tremendous effort as they restricted the Blue Jays’ offence from scoring many runs. Toronto will be looking to improve their performance in their next match-up. It will be interesting to see how the Orioles carry their winning
momentum forward and build on the confidence from this much needed victory against the Blue Jays.
