Baltimore Orioles defeat the Toronto Blue Jays with a strong 7th innings stint
The 16,589 fans in the Orioles Park at Camden Yards may have bolstered the home team in their match against the Toronto Blue Jays, but there was much more on stake for the ball club to fight for. The Baltimore Orioles had not won 4 consecutive series in a row since 2004.
Yesterday night provided that moment when Jake Arrieta took the mound for the side. Rumoured to be his final outing of the season, the rookie ball thrower achieved the hallmark for the team in stunning fashion. The versatile player won his 6th game of the season, reducing his Earning Run Average to 4.66. He featured in 6 innings and produced 5 strike outs, while conceding 4 hits. For what may be learned from the ball thrower’s performance is the level of influence the team players have attained from Buck Showalter.
The Blue Jays were, on the other hand, trying to rub and rinse off their losing rust. Much to the disappointment of the management, the team has done anything short of performing. And that is a viable concern for the fans and the ball club. Shawn Hill featured in his second game of the season after recuperating from an elbow ligament replacement surgery. The pitcher was able to go on with his form till the 5.2 inning. He conceded 9 hits, 3 runs and 1 ball in his 98 pitches. He managed to strike out 4 hitters and decrease his Earning Run Average to 4.09.
The game started off with the Baltimore side on the mound and the Jays on the batting plate. However, it was the Orioles who started off with the scoring. The breakthrough came in the bottom 4th, curtsey Luke Scott who initially made a mark with his sprint through the last base. He started the whole move with a double to the deep left. He then ran home off Felix Pie’s single to the deep right. Nick Markakis made it 2-0 for the side in the bottom 5th with a 410 homer to the right. Ty Wigginton then added another later on in the same innings. He then began with a single to the left and moved to the second off a throwing error by catcher, John Buck.
The onslaught from the Orioles didn’t end there as the Toronto side brought on the bullpen to mince the home team’s attacking run. Unfortunately, that didn’t prove to happen as the hosts turned the s***w on their scoring form with a dominating display of scoring. The bottom 7th saw 6 runs going on the board and the innings began with Wigginton who doubled to the deep right. Going on, David Purcey walked Felix Pie to the first base. He was replaced by Josh Roenicke on the mound and it didn’t provide much of a difference for the side as Adam Jones got Wigginton to the last base, off a single to the left. Felix moved from 2nd to 3rd base following an advancing throw. Matt Wieters made his way to the plate and his single to the right got Pie through for the 5th run of the day.
Wieters and Jones were on the first two bases now and after Cesar Izturis was walked, the players moved up a base. Jones then scored when confusion arose from Josh Bell’s grounder shot to the catcher. The pitcher made a throwing error and this got the team its 6th run. The basses were piled up again and all it took was Robert Andino’s double to the deep left to get Wieters, Izturis and Bell through for 3 runs. The score now read in Baltimore’s favour with a 9-0 score line.
The match was nearly over and the Blue Jays didn’t reply. Not until the top 8th, in which Aaron Hill drove a massive 400 feet home run to the left, getting Yunel Escobar and Lyle Overbay for 3 more runs. The Orioles were in good form and they ended the game in style. The last batch of runs came in the bottom 8th and it was Adam Jones who made his mark on the game with a 377 feet homer to the left. The hit allowed Pie to score and bring up the 11th run for the team. Baltimore won 11-3 and completed a monumental straight 4 series win.
