Baltimore Orioles defeated by New York Yankees 1-3 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles were beaten by the New York Yankees 1-3 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Friday, October 12 in the finale of their five match American League Division Series.
Orioles’ Manager Buck Showalter and the fans will be extremely disappointed with the outcome of the series. Baltimore edged past the Yankees in Game 4 to force the series into the decider. With momentum on their side, they were hoping to continue their good
work in the finale to break their 15- season losing streak but that did not turn out to be the case.
Yankees’ starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia was too hot to handle for Baltimore as he gave up just one run in nine solid innings to set up an easy win for his team. His counterpart from the Orioles, Jason Hammel allowed four hits and two runs in just over five
innings to take the loss.
"He's our go-to guy," Derek Jeter said of Sabathia. "He's been our go-to guy since he's been here."
Relief pitchers Pedro Strop and Brian Matusz combined to toss up a shut-out inning but the Yankees held on to their lead comfortably to claim a 3-2 series victory.
"They are a very good club and they are a very resilient club," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "You have a bunch of young kids over there that just play the game the right way and play hard. And you think about it, we played 23 games, and there were
four runs that separated us. It's an accomplishment for both clubs because they never went away. People thought they were going to go away, they never went away."
Raul Ibanez had an excellent time on the plate as he singled to centre in the fifth inning to break the deadlock and open Yankees’ scoring. Ichiro Suzuki, who was acquired from the Seattle Mariners last month, showed the stuff he is capable of as he doubled
to deep right centre in the sixth to double Yankees’ lead 2-0.
Lew Ford drove in only Orioles’ run in the eighth inning but his effort was never going to be enough against the inspired Yankees’ side.
