Baltimore Orioles defeats Seattle Mariners, 7-6 in thirteenth-inning - MLB Updates
American League’s Baltimore Orioles clinched a first outing against the Seattle Mariners 7-6, after an electrifying thirteen-innings competition at the Oriole Park on May 10, to take a 1-0 lead in the three-game series.
The game was tied at 5-5 in the top of the thirteenth, when Mariners, Mike Wilson hit a grounder to left-centre of the field, for a runs-batted-in (RBI) 6-5 lead generating single.
It sent the Orioles were in a bad position, but Nick Markakis drove in a base-stealing single to help the Orioles escape from pressure. Then, Jake Fox touched to left-side of field, allowing Markakis steal second base.
With two bases-loaded, Mariners’ closer, Brandon League failed to sustain the pressure and tossed two balls to give away a tying RBI single to Felix Pie. On the next pitch, Pie moved to second base on a ground out and then League yielded another RBI single
for the Mariners’ twentieth loss in 2011.
Adam Kennedy, hitting a two-run homer in second inning, provided the Mariners’ an early 2-0 lead, but the Orioles James Jerry Hardy launched a homer in next inning to shorten the lead 1-2. Then, Adam Jones added an RBI double to take the Orioles 3-2 in sixth.
Mariners were not ready to let the game slip away so easily. Chone Figgins and Miguel Olivo both added an RBI single each to take their club back into leading position with a 4-3 score, in the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Orioles’, Luke Scott hit a tying single and Jones added a leading RBI single.
Orioles were enjoying a 5-4 lead in ninth, when Justin Smoak chipped an RBI single forcing the game into tenth inning with 5-5.
Mariners’ starter, Michael Pineda yielded three innings on seven hits, walked and struck-out six batters over six innings. Relievers, David Pauley, Aaron Laffey and Chris Ray did not give any run in their innings. However, reliever Jamey Wright gave away
two runs on three hits in one inning and closer, League yielded two runs on four hits over 2/3 innings.
On the other hand, Orioles’ starter, Jake Arrieta consumed two runs on four hits, walked three and managed six strike-outs over six innings. Reliever, Mike Gonzalez was also expensive as he yielded two runs on three hits in just 2/3 innings.  
Reliever, Kevin Gregg and closer, Jeremy Accardo both gave away one-run each in their spells. Relievers Koji Uehara and Jim Johnson remained score-less in their short spells.
