Baltimore Orioles down Los Angeles Angels 5-1 to kick off series - MLB Update
The Baltimore Orioles started of their series with a 5-1 victory against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium on May 2, 2013.
Opening pitcher Chris Tillman had a great outing who threw down eight scoreless innings to record his second victory of the season. The pitcher currently stands at a 2-1 winning record for the season after six starts and has posted a 4.60 ERA and 1.40 WHIP.
The batters did come to the party as well but it was a game that will be remembered more for the decent pitching.
Manager Buck Showalter was extremely pleased with how things went. It was one of those rare occasions this season that an opening pitcher went into the eight. Not giving up a run was obviously a bonus.
Buck said that Chris, who was pitching for the first time at the ballpark, left him and the bullpen quite happy. Earlier it appeared that the 25-year-old from Anaheim may struggle but that did not happen.
"I remember sitting there, and it looked like it was going to be a 20-pitch-an-inning outing," Showalter said. "Pitching that eighth inning was huge. I know there's about seven guys down in the bullpen who really liked it."
Tillman himself was quite pleased by the performance and thought that pitching in front of family and friends was an extra incentive. He was happy with his performance in the game as well.
"It's special," Tillman said. "I think it's always fun to pitch in front of your family and friends, especially to pitch a good one like that. I was happy with it."
Catcher Matt Wieters was impressed by the control that was shown by Chris and said that he did not make it easy for the opposing numbers to score off him. He particularly liked his changeup which was executed rather nicely.
"The biggest thing was that Tillman was able to control the ball in tonight. He was able to back them off the plate a little bit and throw some strikes in where you couldn't just lean out there. That made his offspeed stuff even better," Wieters said.
The birds scored in four innings including two runs in the top of the ninth to add insurance to the scoreboard. Manny Machado scored for the 11th consecutive game while American League Player of April Chris Davis also got an RBI in the sixth.
Nate McLouth completed another satisfying performance with a two-run long ball at the top of the ninth to take the O’s up by five runs to nil. The Angels were able to add a run at the bottom of the ninth but it proved to be too late.
The Orioles so far have had a decent road trip and had posted a 5-3 winning record in eight games and three more to play. Fans will be hoping to see more of this good stuff.
