Baltimore Orioles down New York Yankees 4-2 to sweep series at Camden Yards - MLB News
Baltimore Orioles downed the New York Yankees 4-2 on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the Camden Yards to sweep the division rivals 3-0 and in the process getting a firmer grip on the second spot in the American league East. The Yankees meanwhile dropped to the fourth spot after a fifth consecutive defeat.
There was plenty of support for the home team in Baltimore form a packed house. Chris Tillman, the starting pitcher who recorded his sixth win of the month, was surprised by the kind of support they were shown during the game. He said that it was louder than he has previously experienced.
"I remember thinking to myself, 'Wow, this is pretty loud right now,'" Tillman said. "They supported us all the way through, win or lose, and you've got to appreciate it."
Tillman now has a 10-2 record this season. His performance in the game was pretty good as well as he threw down six innings giving away only two runs.
The batters too came to the party as Manny Machado, Nate McLouth and Chris Davis all homered in the match. Second baseman Brian Roberts who made a return and played the game as designated hitter got a single and a sacrifice fly.
Chris Davis in the process hit his 31st home-run, becoming the first Orioles' hitter to do so prior to the All-Star break. He is also the only third slugger in the American League to hit 30 long balls before the end of June. He also has hit 25 doubles. According to some, no one has hit 30 plus homers and 25 plus singles before the end of June at the Major League level.
The first baseman said that the people are now understanding that the Orioles are taking this season seriously and last year was not just a one off.
"I think more and more people are getting to see us play and kind of understand what we've got going on here," said Davis. "We've got belief in ourselves dating back to last year. People got to see us a little at the end of the season on the national stage. But the more they see us and the more we win, the better for us."
This is the first time since 2008 that the birds were able to beat the Yankees in back to back home series. The win obviously was crucial for the Orioles who often have found it hard against the New York ballclub.
The Baltimore Orioles will look forward to proving people wrong about 2012 as being a fluke. Many experts had written the Orioles off citing the lack of moves on the ballclub's part during the off season. Buck Showalter, the manager of the O's, however maintained that some of the moves sometimes are those which are not made. It appears that its proving to be right.
