Baltimore Orioles down New York Yankees 6-3 to win series at Camden Yards – MLB news
Baltimore Orioles were finally able to win a home series at the Camden Yards as they downed the New York Yankees 6-3 at their home field to take the series 2-1 on Wednesday, May 22, 2013.
This was Orioles first series win against the New York ballclub at the Orioles Park since April of 2009.
The win not only boosted the morale of the birds but also has helped in narrowing the gap between the two teams in the American League East standings. Currently the Orioles are in third place and are three games behind the leaders Yankees.
The basis of win was set by some good batting the O’s hitters who struck the long ball thrice. Nick Markakis hit a solo home-run in the bottom of the first to get the home team the lead.
First baseman Chris Davis continued his golden run and smashed a two-run home-run in the same innings to make the lead 3-0.
Robin Cano was able to cut the lead slightly with an RBI single in the third innings. Matt Wieters got his seventh home-run this season with two bases loaded to put his team miles ahead. The Yankees were never truly able to recover and had two single run
innings afterwards but never really threatened the lead.
Jason Hammel picked the win for the Orioles, improving upon his impressive season’s win-loss record to 6-2. The pitcher tossed nearly seven innings and gave away just two runs on six hits.
Buck Showalter, the manager for Baltimore Orioles, was pleased by the efforts by Jason who had been a touch off colour lately. He said that the pitcher is yet to show his best and signs from him were promising.
“[Hammel] likes to win,” Showalter said. “I like guys who care a lot. Like all of us, we sometimes have to get out of our way a little bit, now and then. I don't think we've yet seen the best of him yet, and that's encouraging.”
Chris Davis was quite pleased by the outcome as well and believed that there are tough stretches in a season that has 162 games in it. The hitter who eventually had a fantastic 4-for-4 night, his second for the season, said one has to check his emotions
and continue to work hard.
“When you play 162 games, you're going to have stretches where you don't feel good or you might even feel good but you're still losing ballgames,” Davis said. “I think the biggest thing to remember is to keep your emotions in check and continue to work like
we have.”
This was a much needed win for the Orioles who lost six games at a trot in home conditions. They will certainly take confidence from beating one of the very best sides in the Major League and will look to build upon the series win.
