Baltimore Orioles down Washington National 6-2 in the battle of the Beltways – MLB news
The Baltimore Orioles went one up in the battle of the Beltways as they downed Washington Nationals 6-2 at the Nationals Park on Monday, May 27, 2013.
The game remained in control if the O’s for the most part apart from the start when the Nationals took a single run lead in the bottom of the second. Once the ball got rolling for the birds in the fourth, there was no stopping them.
It was also a great game pitching wise for the Orioles as Jason Hammel posted the best season game thus far in 2013. The pitcher threw down eight innings, surrendering just two runs and eight hits.
Darren O’Day had a three up three down bottom of the ninth to make sure that things did not get out of hand like the previous game.
Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter was pleased at the outcome of the game and said that the previous four games against the Toronto Blue Jays were quite tough and took physical as well as emotional toll. The performance by Jason made it easier for the team
to move one.
“It was a challenge for everybody physically, emotionally and mentally,” Showalter said. “After four tough games in Toronto, I can't tell you how proud I am of everybody. And Ham was outstanding in a much-needed outing.”
Matt Wieters, the catcher for the birds, was also pretty pleased with what he saw from behind the home plate. He considered it to be the best performance by the ace pitcher of the season by a country mile. He said that Jason is a competitor who does not
give up.
“That's, by far, the best he's thrown the ball this year,” Matt Wieters said. “Thing with Ham is he's going to compete, no matter what kind of stuff he has out there, and when he's able to bring that kind of location with that stuff, he's got a good chance
to succeed.”
The batters also came to the party as they were able to pile up six runs in scoring in four different innings. Yamaico Navarro got the wheels into motion as he got an RBI single in the fourth innings. A two-run RBI single by Nick Markakis got the O’s into
the driving seat.
Matt Wieters than was able to drive in a run on a sacrifice double play in the fifth. The Nationals scored their second and last run of the ballgame in the sixth innings.
Yamaico was able to add another RBI single in the seventh and the sixth and final run was scored by an Adam Jones’ RBI single. Uncharacteristically, none of the Orioles’ batters was able to get a home-run in the game.
It was a great game for the birds who found some more confidence that was much needed after a tough time in Toronto.
