Baltimore Orioles edge Kansas City Royals 4-3 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles edged Kansas City Royals 4-3 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Wednesday, May 16 in the second game of the their two match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Humberto Quintero had an excellent night with the bat as he singled to centre in the fifth to give the Royals a crucial 2-0 lead. Jeff Francoeur and Alcides also made the most of available opportunities early on to put the Orioles under pressure.
Baltimore fought back brilliantly in the eighth inning, thanks to Nick Markakis’s effort and J.J. Hardy scored to reduce the deficit to 1-2. The Royals responded immediately as Alex Gordon doubled to deep right to put his team 3-1 ahead and it seemed the
Royals are going to secure a surprise win.
Wilson Betemit added a solo home run against Jonathan Broxton in the ninth to bring the Orioles back into the contest.  Hardy, once again, rose to the occasion as he singled to centre to level the score and then Adam Jones broke the tie in the 15th
inning with a towering home run to left, which shattered Royals’ hopes.
"I had three opportunities earlier with men in scoring position that I did not succeed in, which is by far the most frustrating thing for me," Jones said. "I was 0 for 3. I did not give one of my seven at-bats away. I can live with myself when I do that."
"I had some pitches to hit, just missed them, part of it, 0 for 6," Jones said. "Some people were behind me, yelling at me, `Hey, come on Jones.' I showed them. After I hit that, they shut up the heck up."
Credit must be given to the Royals for the way they fought against one of the most successful teams in American League this season. Ned Yost and company have struggled to live up to the expectations since the start of this year.
Their fans expected to give results on consistent basis but so far nothing seems to be working for them. It will be interesting to see if they can change the course of their destiny after the All Star Break.
