Baltimore Orioles edge Minnesota Twins 4-3 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles edged Minnesota Twins 4-3 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Thursday, July 19 in the finale of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Orioles should be given credit for showing great fighting skill and determination in last two games of the series.
With their win against the Twins on Thursday, they also improved to 48-44, maintaining their second place on the American League East Division standings table.
Josh Willingham provided the Twins with a perfect start as he singled to left and Ben Revere scored the opening run. Trevor Plouffe also made his presence felt with a double to left in the first to extend the Twins’ lead to 2-0.
Chris Davis homered to right in the second to bring the Orioles back into the contest. Nick Markakis also had a great time on the plate as he grounded into fielder choice to third in the seventh.
Mark Reynolds played a key role in deciding the outcome of the game with an RBI double to centre in the eighth inning as the Orioles came back from behind to take a decisive 4-3 lead.
"I think my bat's 34 inches and I used all of it," Reynolds said in a post game interview. "It got in on me a lot. I'd been pulling off pitches all day and I was real frustrated with it.”
“I went up there with the mindset, just stay inside the ball. We don't need a homer. We need a single. I had the mindset of really staying on the ball and not getting out in front and rolling over on something. Stayed through it and good things happened,"
he added.
Orioles’ starting pitcher Wei Yin Chen put up another dominant show on Thursday to improve his record to 8-5. He struck-out five and gave up just three runs in seven solid innings, laying the foundation of a superb victory.
Relief pitchers Pedro Strop and Jim Johnson also made useful contributions with the baseball. Strop tossed up a scoreless inning and Johnson pitched the perfect ninth for his 28thsave of the season.
