Baltimore Orioles edge New York Yankees 5-4 at Bronx – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles edged the New York Yankees 5-4 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Monday, July 30 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Eric Chavez had a decent time on the plate as he singled to right in the first inning and Raul Ibanez scored to put the Yankees 1-0 ahead. Wilson Betemit brought the Orioles back into the contest with a solo home-run to right in the third inning.
Omar Quintanilla hit a sacrifice fly to centre and Nick Markakis hit sacrifice fly to right in the fifth to extend Orioles lead to 3-1.
Ibanez continued to fight for the Yankees. His home-run to right in the fifth reduced the Orioles lead to 2-3. However, the Orioles were also determined to secure a win. Markakis doubled to deep-centre and J.J. Hardy singled to right in the seventh to give
Baltimore complete control of the situation.
"We know where we stand, who we're up against," Markakis said. "We just got to take it day by day."
Chavez hit his second home-run to right and Ichiro Suzuki connected for  a solo home-run in the seventh to add spice to the proceedings but the Orioles were good enough to hold on to their one run lead to devastate their American League East Division rivals.
Orioles’ starter Miguel Gonzalez pitched six plus effective innings. Allowing four hits on six hits, he grabbed his third win of the season.
"This is not his first good outing here," manager Buck Showalter said. "I think he's given us pretty good outings consistently."
"I was happy to be here and real happy to play at Yankee Stadium and play in front of that crowd. It was a great experience," Gonzalez said with a smile on his face.
With their win over New York on Monday, Baltimore improved their record to 54-49. Right now, Buck Showalter and his men are placed second on the league standings table and it will be thrilling to see if they can reach the playoffs for the first time in almost
twelve years.
