Baltimore Orioles edge past New York Yankees 2-1 in Game 4 of ALDS – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles showed nerves of steel as they edged past the New York Yankees 2-1 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Thursday, October 11 in Game 4 of their five match American League Division Series.
It was an amazing game of baseball as both teams fought for supremacy. Yankees had plenty of opportunities to finish off the Orioles but that did not turn out to be the case.
Yankees came back from behind to snatch a memorable victory in Game 3 to take a crucial 2-1 series lead. However, it was the Orioles who held their nerves under pressure on Thursday to force the series into the decider.
It will be interesting to see if Buck Showalter and company can continue their excellent work in the finale to reach the American League Championship Series for the first time since 1997.
"I don't take for granted at any time what these guys are accomplishing so far," Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter said. "They know that. I have so much respect for our guys."
Nate McLouth provided Baltimore with an excellent start as he homered to right in the fifth inning to put the side on the board. Yankees had several scoring opportunities to score in first four innings but they were unable to take advantage of them. Orioles made them pay heavily for their errors on the field.
Robinson Cano grounded out to second in the sixth inning to keep Yankees hopes alive. However, the night belonged to the Orioles. J.J. Hardy drove in the tie breaking single in the 13th inning as Orioles managed to take the series into the decider.
"We just kept telling ourselves, 'This is not the last night of the season,'" Hardy said.
"There hasn't been a whole lot of opportunities to score runs," Hardy said, "so when there are those opportunities, I think we're trying a little bit too hard."
Starting pitcher Joe Saunders played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he gave up just three hits and one run in five plus innings. However, it was relief pitcher Pedro Strop who claimed his first win of the postseason, pitching two shut-out innings.
