Baltimore Orioles edge Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 in thrilling finale – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles edged Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Sunday, June 10 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The win will be of great importance for the Orioles who now have an impressive 34-26 record. With their series triumph on Sunday evening, Buck Showalter also managed to stay within touching distance of American League East Division leaders; Tampa Bay Rays.
It will be interesting to see if the Orioles can continue their impressive form over the next few days to replace the Rays before the All Star Break.
"We'd rather win games in nine, but if you're going to go extras you want to win those," Wieters said in a post game interview. "The key is our bullpen has been able to keep teams where they're at -- especially when we get to extra innings -- and just give
our offense the chance to get a timely hit."
"I wasn't sure it was going to go quite far enough, and it went just out of Pence's reach," Wieters said. "With Jonesy's speed, you know he's going to score if you can get it off the wall."
Matt Wieters, once again, produced a heroic performance, driving in the tie breaking run in the tenth as Baltimore prevailed in a nail biting encounter. Credit should also be given to Steve Tolleson who hit a three run home run in the fourth inning to bring
his side back into the contest.
Wieters showed no signs of nerves under pressure as he doubled in the game winning run in the bottom of the tenth to keep Phillies’ starting pitcher Cliff Lee winless this season.
Starting pitcher Jason Hammel put up another brilliant show, allowing just four runs and six hits in six plus innings.
Earlier in the second game on Saturday, the Orioles snatched win in the twelfth inning to dent Philadelphia’s confidence levels.
Phillies have now lost eight out of their last nine games and they will be looking to fight back to change the course of their destiny.
