Baltimore Orioles flattened by New York Yankees 5-8 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles were flattened by New York Yankees 5-8 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Monday, May 14 in the opening game of their two match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Buck Showalter and company had an excellent series against the inform Tampa Bay Rays and they were hoping to continue their domination against New York as well but that did not turn out to be the case.
New York took complete advantage of the Orioles’ unforced errors and they showed great determination, fighting spirit and mental strength to come back from behind to secure an epic victory.
Baltimore made an aggressive start to the contest with J.J. Hardy having a great time on the plate. A Jones helped the Orioles take a crucial 2-0 lead in the first inning. Joe Girardi and his men fought back brilliantly afterwards and Nick Swisher, Alex
Rodriguez and Robinson Cano making a wonderful play in the fourth inning to level score.
However, the star of the show was Mark Teixeira, who hit a crucial home run in the eighth to break the deadlock. Eric Chavez’s sacrifice fly in the ninth gave the Yankees 1-0 lead in the series.
"X had a good night," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "I was real proud of him."
"I was hoping it was one of those things that would go away," Yankees’ closing specialist David Robertson said. "But it keeps hanging around. Honestly, I don't think it's too bad."
Although the Yankees emerged victorious, starting pitcher Ivan Nova will be slightly disappointed with his effort. He allowed five runs and seven hits in five-plus innings. His counterpart Jason Hammel also looked troubled on the mound, giving up five runs,
four earned in just over five innings.
Relief Pitcher David Phelps took over in the sixth innings and he struck out three times to win for the first time this season. Hardy had three RBI’s and a home run in a strong outing and it will be interesting to see if he can put up a similar show in the
second game.
