Baltimore Orioles grind New York Yankees 5-0 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 5-0 at Yankees Stadium in New York, NY on Wednesday, May 2 in the decisive finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Orioles looked in commanding touch in a game that proved to be completely one sided. Making the most of available opportunities, Buck Showalter and company made their opponents pay heavily for their errors on the field.
Both teams struggled to take advantage of scoring opportunities early on. Matt Wieters, once again, showed his class, composure and great temperament as he homered to the right in the fourth to help the Orioles take a 1-0 lead. Robert Andino doubled Orioles’
lead 2-0 after he drove in an infield single to shortstop and Chris Davis scored.
Nick Markakis also played a key role in Orioles’ rare series win New York as he hit a towering home-run in the seventh and Wieters doubled to deep right centre to give Baltimore an impassable 4-0 lead at the end of the seventh. Nick Johnson added an RBI
to centre to help the Orioles establish complete control over the contest.
Starting pitcher Jake Arrieta pitched with great control and accuracy on Wednesday night as he allowed just five hits and no runs in eight solid innings. He struck-out nine to match his career best and win his second start of the season.
"After I make my pitch don't get too far from the mound. Make a quality pitch, get the ball back and get right back to work," Arrieta said of his strategy. "When things are going well, tempo is a positive part of your outing."
"It's big. Those guys have great stuff and great ability," Wieters, the Orioles catcher said in a post game interview. "Now they're starting to learn how to pitch and get deep into games."
Yankees’ pitcher Ivan Nova took his first loss after 15-game winning streak. Orioles, who are 12-30 against the Yankees since 2010, will take a lot of confidence from their series win and they also improved their 2012 season record to 16-9.
