Baltimore Orioles hammer New York Yankees 10-6 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles made the most of opportunities to flatten the New York Yankees 10-6 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Thursday, September 6 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular
season.
Orioles used their home conditions very effectively to create all sorts of problems for their opponents. The offence in particular played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. The win was of great importance for Buck Showalter and his men as it
helped them get back to the top of American League East Division standings table.
In some ways, it is going to be a season defining series for both teams. Orioles will be looking to sweep the Yankees to gain valuable momentum going before the end of the season.
Adam Jones singled to centre in the first inning to put Baltimore on the board. Matt Wieters displayed some top quality hitting skills as he connected for a three run home-run to left in the first inning to stretch Orioles’ lead to 4-0. Robert Andino and
Mark Reynolds hit back-to-back home-runs to put their team in a commanding position at 6-1.
Yankees fought back superbly, scoring five runs in the eighth inning to level the score 6-6 but Orioles were too hot to handle at their home ballpark. Reynolds, Jones and Chris Davis all smacked home-runs in the eighth inning to give Baltimore an impassable
10-6 lead.
"I've always asked our trainer, Richie Bancells, how loud can this place get? I always asked that," Jones said. "After I hit that home run, he came up to me and said, 'That's how loud this place can get.' "
"That's the biggest hit I've ever had in my life. Everything else up to this point has been leading up to this," he said.
Orioles’ starting pitcher Jason Hammel pitched with great control and accuracy as he gave up just six hits and a run in five effective innings. Relief pitcher Darren O’Day grabbed the win after he did not give up any hits in his short spell. For the Yankees,
David Robertson took the loss after he allowed three hits and three runs.
