Baltimore Orioles humble Tampa Bay Rays 6-2 in series finale – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 6-2 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Thursday, July 26 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Chris Tillman was quite outstanding for his team as he pitched six solid innings for his third win of the season. Allowing just five hits and two runs while striking-out five, he played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. Relief pitchers Darren
O’Day and Pedro Strop also made valuable contributions with two scoreless innings.
Adam Jones put the Orioles on the board with an RBI double to left in the fifth inning, breaking the deadlock. Chris Davis continued to impress the skipper as he doubled to deep left-centre. Jim Thome, Jones and Matt Wieters scored to extend Orioles lead
to 5-0. Davis homered to centre in the seventh to deny the Rays any chance of making a comeback.
"It was smoking out there. It's a day you don't want to make too many visits to the mound," manager Buck Showalter said. "That's a challenging day. I'm proud of them. Short rest, turn around. That's why they're different."
"This was a challenge day today. It was," Showalter stressed. "Our guys responded."
"I think confidence has a lot to play into it," Tillman said in a post game interview. "It comes down to getting my delivery right. I put a lot of hard work in during the offseason and coming in, so I'm happy with where I'm at right now."
With their win against Tampa Bay, the Orioles also reclaimed the second spot on the American League East Divisions standings table. Buck Showalter and company were annihilated in first two games of the series and the Rays looked set to secure a rare series
sweep at Oriole Park.
Credit should be given to Baltimore’s pitching rotation that created all sorts of problems for the Rays’ hitters. After giving up 10 runs in the previous game, the pitching attack executed their game plan to perfection on Thursday to keep the Orioles in
the playoff race.
