Baltimore Orioles humiliated by Detroit Tigers 2-7 in series’ opener – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles were humiliated by the Detroit Tigers 2-7 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Friday, July 13 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Buck Showalter and company will be very disappointed with the result of the game. After surprising their critics with their extraordinary performances in first half the season, the Orioles were looking to start from where they left off.
However, the Tigers ruined their party with starting pitcher Doug Fister tossing up seven effective innings. Fister had trouble controlling his fastballs in his previous starts, pitched with great control and accuracy on Friday to help his side secure their
sixth straight win.
The right hander gave up just a run on three hits while striking-out eight to improve his record to 3-6. Orioles’ starter Jason Hammel, on the other hand, had nothing much to cheer about as he took his sixth loss of this season. There was more bad news for
the Orioles after Showalter removed Hammel in the fourth inning due to his right knee injury.
"I was driving toward the plate and it didn't feel good," Hammel said. "Something felt really bad. It's the same area as the injury was before. It's kind of just day to day. We scheduled an MRI for (Saturday) and we'll find out more, but as of right now,
we don't really know what's going on here."
"It was a good way to start," Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said. "He had little bit of a tough first half physically. I wanted to show a little confidence in him."
It’s the same injury that has been troubling the starter since the start of the season and it will be interesting to see if he can recover soon to give some relief to injury plagued Orioles.
Nick Markakis hit a ground rule double to deep-centre in the third to keep Baltimore in the game and Matt Wieters doubled to deep-right in the bottom of the ninth. Third baseman Miguel Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta homered for the Tigers.
