Baltimore Orioles humiliated by Kansas City Royals 2-8 in series opener – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles were humiliated by the Kansas City Royals 2-8 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Thursday, August 9 in the opening game of their four match series.
Debutant third baseman, Manny Machado displayed top quality hitting skills, going 2-for-4 but Billy Butler’s impressive home-run spoiled his party as Royals cruised to a comfortable 8-2 win.
"I thought Manny did well, presented himself well tonight," Showalter said. "I'm proud of him. There was a nice calmness about him and a good start. He handled the situation well, all things considered."
"It would have been way much better if we would have come out with a win, but they did a good job," the rookie said.
Alex Gordon connected for a solo home-run in the first inning to provide the Royals with an excellent start. Butler showed just what he is capable of, hitting a three run monster in the first and Mike Moustakas doubled to right in the third to extend Kansas
City’s lead to 5-0.
Jeff Francoeur also played a huge part in Royals’ offensive outburst on Thursday and Salvador Perez drove in a run in the fifth to keep Baltimore on the defensive.
Matt Wieters added a solo home-run to right in the sixth inning but the Royals held on to their lead with ease to take 1-0 series lead.
"That was a great game," manager Ned Yost said. "We tacked on runs on three or four different occasions. (Alcides) Escobar was spectacular at shortstop. Great defense. We hit homers. We hit doubles. We played very, very well."
Orioles’ starting pitcher Wei Yin Chen had another difficult outing as he gave up nine hits and seven runs in just over four innings. Chen, who took his seventh loss of the season, will be hoping to regroup himself before his next start.
Relief pitcher Kevin Gregg took over from Chen to be hit hard. He gave up two hits and one run in just over an inning. Royals’ starter Will Smith, on the other hand, made quick work of Orioles’ batting line up, giving up just two earned runs in seven effective
innings.
