Baltimore Orioles humiliated by New York Yankees 2-7 in Game 1 ALDS – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles suffered an embarrassing 2-7 loss at the hands of New York Yankees at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Sunday, October 7 in the opening game of their five match American League Division Series.
Yankees’ starter C.C. Sabathia played a key role in pushing New York past the Orioles in their series opener. Russell Martin also displayed some top quality hitting skills as he belted a mighty home-run in the bottom of the ninth to help Yankees break the
tie.
Sabathia gave up just eight hits and two runs in eight plus solid innings while striking-out seven batters. Relief pitcher David Robertson continued the good work in the ninth to give Yankees a crucial 1-0 series lead.
Orioles’ starter Jason Hammel also pitched with great control and accuracy as he allowed four hits and two runs in five plus innings to keep Baltimore in the game but he was unfortunate to end up on the losing side.
Reliever Jim Johnson took the loss after giving up five hits and five runs in just 0.1 innings with an astonishing 108.00 ERA.
"Fastball command was good, worked off that," Sabathia said. "Throwing the ball pretty good getting the corners. Tried to stay out there and make some pitches."
"I thought he gave us a great performance," New York manager Joe Girardi said. "Didn't give up a lot of hard hit balls tonight, had a really good changeup tonight, and I thought he used it very effectively."
"I made mistakes," Johnson said. "I obviously paid for those, and that was location. It wasn't anything else. Two fastballs that really cost us. Just have to make a better pitch. That's all it comes down to."
Ichiro Suzuki put Yankees on the board as he doubled to left centre in the first inning. Nate McLouth responded for the Orioles as he earned an RBI single to right in the third to help Orioles come back from behind for a 2-1 lead but the Yankees were too
strong to be overcome on Saturday.
Martin homered to left and Ichiro Suzuki drove in vital runs to cap a five run ninth inning and the Yankees reached home safely.
