Baltimore Orioles lose series opener 1-3 against Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park - MLB News
The Baltimore Orioles’ slide continues as they lost their third successive game, this time against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. The game that took place on April8, 2013 saw the Red Sox overpower the American League East rivals 3-1.
The game was not a fiery affair, something that both teams have recently indulged in. The Boston ballclub took the decisive lead in the bottom of the seventh which was only slightly dented at the top of the ninth by the birds courtesy of a solo home-run
by Adam Jones.
This is the first time that the Baltimore Orioles have fallen below the .500 mark since the end of the 2011 season. The birds, however, are aware that the season is young and there is no real need to start worrying at this point in time.
Centre fielder Adam Jones took the events at a lighter note and joked about the possibility of the Orioles spending the next day in mourning.
"We might spend [Tuesday's off-day] crying as a team, holding each other's hands, just walking through the Prudential Center, just crying," Jones said.
Adam is aware that the margins of defeat have been small and the team can certainly find its way back. Last year the Orioles won most of their close encounters. They will certainly be looking to continuing that trend in order to have a good chance at making
it to the post-season this year as well.
"It's seven games into the season. It's not like we just got blown out. We got beat. One-run games, two-run games. It can go here. It can go there. We're playing good baseball. We've got 155 more to go," Jones said.
Orioles’ batters were unable to take the attack to the opposing numbers, a fact that was accepted by Manager Buck Showalter.
"We just never put [Red Sox starter Clay] Buchholz on his heels much," Showalter said.
Wei-Yin Chen, the starting pitcher for the Orioles was doing well until he was hit for a three-run home-run by Daniel Nava in the bottom of the seventh. The hit certainly tilted a well balanced game into the favour of the hosts.
However, Chen is pleased by his overall performance and is looking to further improve upon it.
"Compared with last outing, I feel like I'm getting better and better," Chen said.
The Baltimore Orioles made a strong start to the season before they have slightly slipped. It is not a big issue as long as they continue to show some fight and live up to their potential.
They will need to bounce back though and in a hurry to make sure that they do not slip down further and maintain their consistent run from the start of the season.
