Baltimore Orioles lose to New York Mets 3-4 in a thrilling encounter – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles lost to New York Mets 3-4 in a thrilling encounter at Citi Field in New York, NY on Wednesday, June 20 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Orioles’ offence, once again, was unable to make the most of scoring opportunities and they managed to put their first run on the board in the eighth inning.
Wilson Betemit homered to right to reduce Mets’ lead to 2-4 and Matt Wieters scored in the bottom of the ninth to keep the Orioles in the hunt but his effort did not prove to be enough.
Starting pitcher Dillon Gee nearly made it three shutouts in three games before the Orioles broke through but New York held of their opponents to complete an impressive series sweep.
"It's tough to follow those guys," Gee said. "It's unbelievable what they've been doing."
"Things happen quick. You've got to refocus," Gee said.
"It's a great park for defense and pitching, and they did that well," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said in a post game interview.
"Our starting pitching presented itself pretty well the last three games. It's just tough to match up with the starts they got," he further added.
Manager Buck Showalter will be very disappointed with what he has seen from his team over the last few days. Despite suffering a series sweep at the hands of the New York Mets, the Orioles are still placed second on the American League East Division standings.
Had the Orioles won this series, they would have replaced the league leaders New York Yankees at the top of the table. It will be interesting to see if the Orioles can put up a solid show in their next series against the iron hot Washington Nationals.
Mets, on the other, took complete advantage of their home conditions throughout the season. Credit must be given to the bullpen who shutout the Orioles in two out of three games. Johan Santana and R. A. Dickey pitched with great control and accuracy in the
first two games to take the pressure off their offence.
