Baltimore Orioles lose to Tampa Bay Rays 10-12 in tough contest – MLB news
Baltimore Orioles suffered a rare third consecutive loss this season as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the birds 12-10 in a night filled with offensive excellence at the Camden Yards on Friday, May 17, 2013.
The Orioles were able to score twice in the bottom of the first innings to go ahead by 2-1 courtesy of a two-run RBI single by Chris Davis. The lead was further stretched in the second innings with a J.J Hardy home-run.
A four-run third innings saw the Rays get back in the driving seat and they never looked back. Another four runs in the fifth helped the Tampa Bay ballclub to further tighten the noose. A lone run in the bottom of the innings by the birds was nearly not enough response to the Rays offensive.
The Rays were able to pile on the misery of the Orioles by pounding another three in the sixth innings to get their final tally of 12 for the night.
The Orioles made a strong comeback in the bottom of the eighth and scored six runs to get within two runs of the Rays. The feature of the innings was a three-run long ball by Charles Dickerson.
However, the O’s bats remained silent in the bottom of the ninth and the game was won by the visiting team by a margin of two runs.
One of concerns at the moment for the Baltimore ballclub is Jason Hammel, who struggled a fair bit with his control. The ace pitcher gave away seven earned runs in less than five innings to leave the team with a fight and a lot of work to be done by the bullpen. This was Jason’s second defeat for the season.
This is the second time in the running circuit that the Orioles have lost three in a row. They are currently standing at a 23-18 win-loss record, though they will certainly be looking to improve on those numbers.
It will be crucial that the birds are able to arrest the slide in order to remain amongst the top teams in the highly competitive American League East. It is high time that the take advantage of the home conditions after a pretty decent show on the road thus far.
