Baltimore Orioles move to top of the table with fourth consecutive win – Baseball update
The Baltimore Orioles continued their unbeaten run in the regular season as they tamed the Detroit Tigers 5-1 in their home opener on Monday. This was the Orioles’ fourth win in a row after comprehensively winning a 3-0 series at Tampa Bay. The Orioles are
off to its best starts since 1997 and have won all four games and have not conceded more than one run in any of those games.
Brian Roberts who has a reputation as a lead-off hitter, hit another lead off-three run shot in the fifth inning of the game. "Robby seems to have been able to dial up what was needed, whether it be a stolen base, a walk, whatever," manager Buck Showalter
said. "He's got a feel for being able to challenge the moment. He's really had some big hits for us early in the year."
Jake Arrieta, who started pitching for the Orioles on Monday, pitched six strong innings allowing only one run in six hits and a walk. He was followed by two scoreless-one hit innings by Jason Berken. Koji Uehara closed the game with a perfect ninth inning.
On the other side, the Tigers’ starter, Rick Porcello, was very shaky with his pitch. He allowed nine hits and a walk in his five innings costing the Tigers five runs. Brayan Villarreal replaced Porcello in the sixth inning with two scoreless innings afterwards.
Ryan Perry threw the perfect ninth inning with one strike out.
Scoring Summary:
Tigers' Rick Porcello allowed Matt Wieters to score the first run of the game with his wild pitch in the second innings.
Tigers' Will Rhymes hit the game tying single to the left in the top of the third inning, bringing home Brandon Inge.
Felix Pie and John Hardy scored on Roberts’ homer to the right centre, bringing Orioles at the top with three run lead.
Nick Markakis ensured the victory for the Orioles by completing his run on Wieters in the fifth inning.
Final Score: Detroit Tigers 1- 5 Baltimore Orioles
Team News:
Orioles have emerged as a great threat for division rivals under the management of Showalter, who joined them midway last year. The addition of players like Vladimir Guerrero, Derrek Lee and Mark Reynolds will boost the chances of winning the division series
after 13 years.
Baltimores are currently at top of the table with four straight wins followed by the New York Yankees who won three out of four games. The Boston Red sox and Tampa Bay Rays had a terrible start with no win in their respective three games.
