Baltimore Orioles option Freddy Garcia, bring Kevin Gausman back – MLB news
Baltimore Orioles have decided to option veteran starter Freddy Garcia to the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles it has been reported. The ballclub is also calling back rookie pitcher Kevin Gausman into the 40-man roster.
Freddy remains on the roster for now and he has kept his options open. Although he is not looking to retire any time soon, it is the option of the pitcher whether he decides to accept being sent to the Tides on waivers or accepts free agency instead. Baltimore
Sun has reported that he has been given an assignment and has not been waived off entirely.
His replacement will be the 22-year-old rookie pitcher Kevin Gausman who has had a rough time at the start of his Major League career. He has so far started five games and has posted a high 7.66 ERA. He has a 0-3 win-loss record and will certainly like to
improve on those numbers once he is back in the roster for the birds.
Freddy has had a mixed year thus far. He has posted a 3-5 win-loss record in 11 games he has so far pitched in, 10 of them as a starting pitcher. He has maintained a 5.77 ERA and many experts believe that his high home-run ratio is not helping his cause
either.
Garcia has maintained a strong 155-106 career winning record. His 4.18 ERA is also lower than his current form which shows that he as the ability but has been off colour recently.
Freddy himself agrees that he has not been doing well and the culture of the Orioles is of moving the pitchers around a lot.
“I did my job for a little bit, and the last couple of starts, no,” said Garcia. “So that's this game. Especially here [in Baltimore], they make a lot of moves. So it's my turn, I guess.”
Kevin Gausman will be a part of the bullpen on his return. He has done it during the spring training and feels that it should not be much different. From a  starting pitcher's point of view, it will allow lesser time to settle in though.
“It'll be a little different,” Gausman said. “But at the same time, that's what I did in Spring Training, pretty much. That's something that'll be good for me. I kind of got into a little routine when I was in Spring Training [in terms of] how many pitches
it took me to get ready.”
Only time will tell if the move will pay off or not and whether or not Freddy will be back for the birds. For now, Kevin Gausman will get another chance at the big leagues while Garcia has much to ponder over what he wants to do over the next few days.
