Baltimore Orioles outclass Boston Red Sox 5-3 in Game 2 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles outclassed the Boston Red Sox 5-3 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Wednesday, August 15 in second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
After hammering the Red Sox 7-1 in series opener, Manager Buck Showalter and company continued to play aggressively in Game 2 to take an impassable 2-0 series lead.
Showalter will be very pleased with the way his team confronted some of the tough situations during the contest and it will be interesting to see if Orioles can come up with another solid performance in the finale to complete a crushing sweep.
The Red Sox made an emphatic start to the match. Jacoby Ellsbury hit a ground rule double to deep right-centre in the fifth to break the deadlock. Carl Crawford doubled the lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly hit to centre.
Nate McLouth revived Baltimore’s fortunes with an RBI single to centre in the sixth. Adam Jones also made useful contribution as he grounded into fielder’s choice to pitcher to level the score. Matt Wieters and Mark Reynolds consolidated as the Orioles scored
five runs in the sixth.
"It was fun. It was awesome," Jones said in a post game interview. "It was much needed."
"There's so much baseball to be played and so many (teams) involved in this that I think it's counterproductive to dwell on it because things can change so quickly in a week's time," Showalter said.
Crawford’s groundout to second in the seventh kept Boston in the game but Showalter and his men held their nerves to prevail. Starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez overcame a shaky start to pitch six solid innings. Overall, he gave up just two runs for his fifth
win of the season.
"I wasn't even set," Gonzalez said. "I was just sitting there waiting for him to come set so I can get into my stance. We're trying to win a game. I'm the leadoff hitter, down two runs, trying to get on base."
Reliever Jim Johnson pitched the perfect ninth to make his 35th save of the year.
