Baltimore Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis looking forward to better times in 2013- MLB News
The Baltimore Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis has recovered from his broken thumb and is in high spirits, ready to get back to the field with even more expectations of a great performance in the 2013 season.
Nick has been a consistent feature of the Orioles, his only team in the Major League so far, in the last seven seasons. He has been a consistent performer and has posted a career batting average of .295 and an on-base percentage of .365. He has hit over
100 hits every season and hit over 180 for five consecutive seasons between 2007 and 2011.
Markakis is looking forward to making a return in the spring training and has already started training after recovering from the broken thumb which forced him to be on the disabled list on September 8, 2012. He was hit by a pitch from CC Sabathia of the
New York Yankees.
"As good as I'm going to get right now.” Markakis said. “I've already started all my stuff and I’m ready to roll. And actually, [I’m] anxious to get down there [to spring training]. I don't have any setbacks.”
He has had injury setbacks in the 2012 season that saw him miss 58 games. He earlier had a surgery on his right wrist to remove a fractured part of the hamates bone. He was out for six weeks due to the surgery and his hot streak, where he had a batting average
of .335 and a .390 on-base percentage was broken.
Nick is confident that his team can carry the good work form 2012 season into the 2013 season. He is also excited to be entering the eight season with the Baltimore Orioles. He also acknowledges that times in the last few seasons were tough for the ball
club but it was all improving now. He also sees that there is an increased unity and harmony in the team.
“It’s good to see. This will by my eighth season coming up, and the six years prior to this past season, it’s been tough. We’ve had our ups and downs but we just couldn’t pull things together. This past season, when things go right and everybody’s on the
same page, good things happen,’’ Markakis said.
Nick also said that the 2012 season was something he did not want to come to an end. He was a bit disappointed with the defeat in the last American League Division Series game at the hands of the Yankees.
“I didn’t want it to end,” Markakis said. “That’s reality. Every good thing comes to an end.”
Nick Markakis is an excellent hitter who can be more then useful in keeping the O’s firing in the 2013 season. A healthy and fit Nick Markakis will be crucial for the success of the Baltimore Orioles for some time to come.
