Baltimore Orioles outshine Tampa Bay Rays 4-0 – MLB Recap
Baltimore Orioles defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-0 in the second game of their three-match regular series encounter on Saturday, August 4 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.
Orioles’ stretched early lead in the first inning and showed their opponents some aggression which proved one of the winning factors for their tremendous win.
Later in the very next inning, the Orioles again scored a run and somewhat strengthened its position. Though the Rays’ pitchers also showed some brilliant ball play early in the game, but overall it was Orioles who kept the momentum going and in the end won in style.
"It's nice to be able to get a hit and RBI, especially when runs can be at a premium, Try and take the lead early make it stand up," Wieters said on his individual and his team’s overall performance which never gave any chance to the Rays to take advantage of any situation.
Orioles’ starter Wei-Yin Chen played brilliantly and pitched seven solid innings and allowed no run on five hits. He struck-out four batters as his ERA remained consistent at 3.46.
"I feel good today, Especially, (catcher Matt) Wieters gave me a really good target. I just hit the target," Chen said through a translator and commented on his performance which gave his team a decent win over the Rays.
Later Orioles' manager Buck Showalter said, "Chen was the story, Five three-ball counts in two games ... he made a lot of quality pitches, He's got a good understanding of what's going on up here at this level right now, and we hope to ride it.,"
Chen’s team-mate and closer Pedro Strop also played well and showed his power. He pitched 1.0 inning and received only one hit and struck-out one Rays’ batter.
On the other hand, the Rays’ starter Jeremy Hellickson proved disastrous. He pitched four innings and allowed four runs and four earned runs. "I just couldn't make a big pitch when I needed to," said Hellickson with disappointment.
He also allowed eight hits, struck-out only four batters on his 3.43 ERA and literally lost the game for the Rays.
