Baltimore Orioles overcome Seattle Mariners 3-1 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles prevailed in a nail biting encounter against Seattle Mariners 3-1 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Monday, August 6 in the opening game of their three match series.
Buck Showalter and company continued to impress the critics as they secured another thrilling win to keep their playoffs hopes alive.
Mark Reynolds provided the O’s with an excellent start as he doubled to deep left centre in the second inning to deadlock. Nick Markakis also made his presence felt as he hit a towering two run home-run in the second to extend the lead to 3-0.
However, the star of the show was starting pitcher Chris Tillman who used his sliders and fastballs extremely effectively to play a key role in deciding the outcome of the game. Overall, he gave up just five hits and one earned run in seven plus effective
innings to pick up his fifth win of the season.
"It was big," Tillman said. "I went out with the mindset of one inning at a time. (The first inning) has been kind of a downfall for me, but I knew what I needed to do to get through it and I made some pitches."
"It feels good," he further added. "I feel like I put a lot of work in in the offseason and carried it into the season and spring training and what not. I feel like it's starting to pay off here, and we're not done. We have a long way to go.."
Relief pitcher Jim Johnson pitched the scoreless ninth to give the Birds a much needed victory on Monday afternoon.
Mariners’ starter, Jason Vargas took his eighth loss of the season after he allowed three runs and eight hits in eight innings. Credit should be given to him for overcoming a shaky start but Seattle’s offence was unable to put enough runs on the board.
With their win, Baltimore extended their winning streak to three games and it will be interesting to see if they can continue this impressive run for the next couple of months to make it through to the post-season.
