Baltimore Orioles overcome erroneous Kansas City Royals 5-3 at Camden Yards - MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles overcame the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Camden Yards. The win saw the birds improve their record to 21-13 and now they are the joint number one team in the American League West.
It was a good effort by the O’s but they had plenty of support from their rivals who made no less than three errors on the field. To make it worse for the Royals, all three came in the fifth inning, allowing the Orioles to add three decisive runs in the
process.
Manny Machado, third baseman for the Orioles saw the innings as a major event in the game which totally changed it in favour of the home team. He thought that it provided the Orioles with all the momentum they needed.
"That's huge," Machado said. "When we can pick up on errors like that, it's huge. That brings up the momentum for us and brings it down for them. That's baseball."
J.J. Hardy, who had a good night with a two-run home-run in the bottom of the second saw the reasons behind the errors. He felt that every time there is a threat of a base being stolen, it adds to the pressure on the fielding side.
"Any time you're playing defense and guys are threats to steal, it puts a bit more pressure on us," Hardy said. "That's what we're doing for them."
Chris Tillman picked up his third win in seven starts and currently has a 3-1 win-loss record.
Manager for the Orioles’ Buck Showalter felt that his team had all the bases covered and the consistent performance from the team also was a contributing factor to the errors made by the Kansas ballclub.
"I think we've run the bases well the last couple of nights, made some things happen there," Showalter said. "[We're] trying to take advantage of what's there and what's not."
It was another game in which the Orioles were able to win once they ended the seventh in front. It was also another save for their closer Jim Johnson who now has 13 saves this season.
The closer feels that the team is getting the right feel of what is expected from them and they all are moving in the right direction as a ballclub.
“Guys are really starting to get a good feel for what's going on and what's expected of them. All 25 are going in the same direction," Johnson said.
The Orioles are now joint leaders of the American League East with the Boston Red Sox and although it is still too early to take rankings into consideration, the team is certainly showing a lot of promise and a good chance of another post-season berth in
2013.
